Along with providing clinical services to respond to people who have experienced violence, abuse and neglect, Northern NSW Local Health District is working strategically to intervene early, and develop a workforce confident in identifying violence, abuse and neglect and providing a response to prevent further harm.

Aboriginal Family Wellbeing and Violence Prevention

We are committed to improving the wellbeing of our Aboriginal communities. Our dedicated Aboriginal and Family Wellbeing and Violence Prevention team? works to implement the NSW Health Aboriginal Family Health Strategy.

Child Wellbeing and Child Protection

Northern NSW Local Health District requires all health workers to complete child wellbeing and child protection training to assist in early identification of child wellbeing concerns, and assisting families to access services they may need. Health workers are assisted by Health Child Wellbeing Units to provide responses to families.

Child Protection Information Exchange

State-wide legislation allows agencies to share information that relates to the safety, welfare and wellbeing of children and young people. Northern NSW Local Health District has an information sharing system, where we share information with certain agencies and professionals about child wellbeing and child protection concerns. NSW Health framework – Prevention and Response to Violence Abuse and Neglect

There is a significant body of evidence that demonstrates the health impact of interpersonal violence. NSW Health has developed a framework to respond to violence, abuse and neglect. NSW Safer Pathway – Safety Action Meetings

Safety Action Meetings are regular meetings chaired by NSW Police and include local service providers working to prevent or reduce serious threats to the safety of domestic violence victims and their children. Staff from Northern NSW Local Health District participate in the meetings with the aim of sharing information to develop tailored, time-specific Safety Action Plans and referrals for support.
