MidStart Program
Are you a Registered Nurse looking for a pathway to become a Registered Midwife?
Start planning your future with MidStart — a supported pathway into midwifery within Northern NSW Local Health District.
The NSW Health MidStart program provides Registered Nurses with the opportunity to gain employment and clinical experience while completing postgraduate midwifery studies.
Registered Nurses will be required to apply, interview and be successful at securing a Midstart position within a hospital. Once appointed, candidates are then required to apply for a Graduate Diploma of Midwifery program, using their hospital letter of offer as supporting evidence. NNSWLHD maintains a strong partnership with Charles Sturt University, providing a well-supported pathway into midwifery training.
The program involves:
- Temporary part-time employment at:
- Tweed Valley Hospital,
- Lismore Base Hospital, or
- Grafton Base Hospital
- Clinical midwifery experience across:
- Antenatal care
- Labour and birth
- Postnatal care
- Special Care Nursery
- All required practice-based learning experiences for the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery
- February and July intakes
- Support from a dedicated education team
- Access to professional development opportunities and leave entitlements
